An Improper Oil Painting Restoration Gets Restored in Houston
A local art appraiser introduced us to the owner of this fine art oil painting. The painting obviously needed to be cleaned. It was an old painting from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. As we began the precision cleaning, we made a startling discovery. The varnish used by the previous restorer was similar to thin translucent animal skin. The previous restorer even used the varnish to mask open gaps in the painting. We carefully removed the old varnish and the strange residue that it had created. Then we filled the gaps that had been masked, inpainted matching the original artist’s palette colors, and applied an appropriate varnish.
The owner and the appraiser were both very pleased with the restoration and conservation of the painting.
