PAINTING RESTORATION Definitions

Art Restoration:  The repair or renovation of pieces of art which have been damaged or have normal aging or decay to bring the works to a state that more closely resembles their original undamaged appearance.

Cleaning:  This is one thing that has brought us paintings that have been damaged by unskilled “restorers” or do-it-yourselfers.  It takes a skilled and gifted hand to remove dirt and grime from a painting. When we clean a painting we will in most cases also remove aged and discolored varnish.

Craquelure:   Tiny cracks caused when the paint or vanish shrinks, frequently because of age.

Ground:   A coating between the canvas and the paint.  One of the things we do when a painting has paint that is flaking is to used a solution on the back of the canvas to secure the paint to the ground.

In-painting:   This is how we re-color your painting if it has missing paint. It is often more than just a touch-up and requires careful matching of the viscosity, texture and color.

Relining: Occasionally, when a canvas has become old, dry, and brittle the canvas tears easily and the paint flakes. In this case, we would attach a material to the entire back of the painting for extra protection and conservation.

Stretcher Bars:   These are the usually wooden bars on the back of the painting which the canvas has been wrapped around. Some people call them back frames.
